As Sri Lanka is a very big island, and as the interesting spots are a good distance from each other, it is essential to have a good driver. Nilam fits the bill and speaks decent English, and a little French. If you are just a couple like we were, or many four people, Nilam alone is a good deal. If you are bigger group, his brother-in-law is a knowledgable guide.
Sri Lanka is a fantastic place, and the security issue is not really a big deal. There are many military checkpoints, but no real sentiment of insecurity. When the guards see the guides badge, they just send you through.
If you want a little bit of Afric, a lot of India, and some of the Maladives and the Seychelles, Sri Lanka is the place!! Take advantage of it before its invaded by tourists!!!
